Sarah Leigh Davis - Art by Sarah
Originally from Fresno, California Sarah Davis is a 28-year-old artist who is able to capture beauty from within and bring it to life through her drawings and paintings. On February 12, 1993 Sarah’s family went to the mountains in Shaver Lake, California for a weekend getaway. They were going to stay in a two-story, three-bedroom house located in the heart of the snow. Sarah’s mom, dad, brother, and sister were all there, as well as another family. It was a very cold, dark night by the time they arrived at the house. They tried to get the house heater to light but could not get it to kick on. Knowing that the house needed to warm up, Sarah’s dad decided to light the fireplace and as he did the entire house exploded, due to a propane leak. Sending debris 100 feet in all directions. Sarah was only two years old and was on life support and hospitalized for 21 days.
She had been thrown, knocked unconscious, and buried in the debris. It took fire fighters two hours to find Sarah. As a result of the accident Sarah suffers from organic brain damage. She also received burns to her face, hands, legs, feet, and suffered a severely broken leg. Her growth plate was reconstructed using donor bone and bone putty. Sarah was the second child to receive such a surgery. The doctors said Sarah would never graduate, never be able to experience life. Over the years Sarah has had 16 surgeries but has always maintained a positive attitude.
Sarah loves horses and attends a therapeutic horse-riding program weekly. Sarah enjoys drawing and painting horses. She has ridden horses since she was 5 years old. Horses are her therapy. Sarah began drawing horses at a very young age. She would give all the doctors and nurses drawings. In February 2018 Sarah began to paint her drawings and now is establishing herself as a local artist. Currently Sarah resides in Wimberley, Texas with her family.
